ANOCA Zone VI ushers in new leadership
The ANOCA Zone VI has ushered in a new era of leadership following the recent elections held at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Malawi.
Hon. Jappie Mhango, the President of the Malawi Olympic Committee, emerged victorious in the presidential election, securing a four-year term by defeating South Africa’s Barry Eugene Hendricks with a vote of 7-4.
This victory signifies a pivotal shift in leadership, as the previous president, Zambia’s Alfred Foloko, opted not to seek re-election after serving in the role.
The newly elected Board is composed of dedicated individuals committed to advancing the Olympic movement in the region. The leadership team now includes Jappie Mhango (President) from Malawi, Gonye Thaban (Vice President) from Zimbabwe, Maxwell Jele (Secretary General) from Eswatini, and Morake Raleaka (Treasurer) from Lesotho.
Additionally, the Board features members Hazel Kennedy from Zambia, Diana Ahrens from Namibia, and Botsang Tsenyego from Botswana, all of whom bring diverse expertise and perspectives to their roles. ANOCA Zone VI, which encompasses Southern African nations, plays a crucial role in the promotion and coordination of Olympic activities throughout the region.
The recent election results signal a new chapter in leadership that is committed to enhancing sports development, prioritizing athlete welfare, and fostering regional collaboration within the Olympic movement. The member states of ANOCA Zone VI include Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
With this new leadership, the organization aims to strengthen its initiatives and create more opportunities for athletes and sports development across these nations. The focus of the new leadership will be on creating sustainable programs that support athletes, promote inclusivity within sports, and enhance the overall effectiveness of Olympic activities in the region. The leadership team is eager to collaborate closely with the member states to achieve these goals and ensure that the Olympic spirit thrives in Southern Africa.
